Introduction
The Department of English Language and Literature was established in 1997. It is affiliated with the University of the Punjab. The contribution of Late Ms. Mussarat Afza, who headed the department from 1997-2005, for establishing this department is worth mentioning. She, with her vibrant spirit, highly disciplined personality and refined literary taste, made this department a model for imparting good values, sense of discipline, quality education and a flare for literature. She is the pioneer of many traditions and activities of the department like seminars and Annual English Plays. She enjoys a legendary status as an inspiring English teacher and has influenced many generations of students who still cherish her fond memory.
English is acknowledged worldwide as the sole medium of international communication and information. The Department aims to produce empowered learners with strong oral and written skills which will help them fulfil their economic and socio-cultural needs and also inculcate a creative, analytical and reflective bent of mind which enables them to think independently and critically.
The Department of English is the backbone of the college. English as a compulsory subject is taught to all Intermediate classes and degree programmes as well.Since its inception, the Department of English has been headed by the following teachers:

Ms. Khalida Ilyas is presently working as the Head of the Department.
Facilities:
A Library for postgraduate students. The library is equipped with the latest books in the field of literature and criticism. The English library also has subscription of two international literary journals “Poetry Review” and “ Comparative Literature”.
Computer Lab, equipped with the latest computers to provide easy access to the Internet for research purposes.
T.V Room where students can watch movies on the texts of drama and novel to enhance their understanding of these texts.

English Dramatics Society “ ORACLE”
The dramatics society parented by the department owes a lot to Ms. Mussarat Afza’s invaluable support and willingness in initiating the dramatic activities. At present, Ms. Gulshan is the in charge of the Dramatics Society.

M.A English Literature
ELIGIBILITY
The candidates for admission to M.A English Literature must have second division in B.A English. The candidates must have passed English paper of 200 marks. The students who have read English Literature in B.A will be preferred. The candidates have to pass the departmental admission test and interview for securing admission in M.A English Literature.
CAREER PROSPECTS
A large number of students after passing MA English find jobs as teachers in schools in the public and private sector. A degree in English also proves useful to students desirous of joining the federal and provincial civil services. Many students of this department after doing MA English are working as lecturers through PPSC.
